The news story "Economic sense of maintaining unused roadways, schools, bridges questioned" (July 17) by Tom Fontaine was misleading.

Mr. Fontaine wrote: "For 11 years, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission paid crews to maintain two miles of highway no one could use." He deduced, based on a $5,420-a-month average cost to maintain each highway mile in its system, that "the commission would have spent more than $1.3 million to keep up the closed section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway ... ."
