Yellow Cab to Challenge State Assessment

Yellow Cab Co. of Pittsburgh said Wednesday it might have to charge higher fares because of a nearly 36 percent increase in Pennsylvania's assessment on passenger motor carriers.

The company, based in Manchester in the North Side, said it would challenge the recent Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission levy. It especially crimps the company because it "comes on the heels of increased fuel costs and PUC-mandated fleet upgrades, all of which have occurred in the last three years," said attorney Ray Middleman, who is representing Yellow Cab. He also said cabs statewide have seen revenue fall 7 percent this year.
